What is Allbirds?

With conscious consumerism on the rise, Allbirds is driving innovation and sustainability in the footwear industry. The footwear brand, launched in 2016 by Tim Brown and Joey Zwillinger, is not only creating comfortable shoes but is doing so in an environmentally friendly way.

The product line is made from natural materials such as wool, sugar, and trees. The Merino wool used in their shoes is ZQ-certified, guaranteeing the highest standards of animal welfare. The commitment to sustainability extends well beyond materials. The manufacturing processes adopted by Allbirds are designed in a way to minimize emissions and waste.

The brand’s dedication to eco-friendly practices has also earned Allbirds the coveted B Corp certification. This further underscores the holistic approach adopted by Allbirds towards building an ethical and sustainable business.

PROS

CONS

Sustainability

From the very start, Allbirds has been seeking to replace petroleum-based synthetic materials with natural alternatives. In situations, where Allbirds has not been able to find a suitable alternative, they have invented on their own, for instance, SweetFoam®, a shoe sole material derived from the world’s first carbon-negative green EVA.

Allbirds has also invested in novel solutions, including Plant Leather, which is the brand’s 100% natural and plant-based leather. To offset the carbon emissions, Allbirds has undertaken various initiatives over the years.

Through the ongoing support for the Argentina Regenerative Wool, Allbirds is not only improving the soil health but in Phase I, the project is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 100,000 tonnes over the 30-year period.
