Odd Box is combatting the global climate crisis one cucumber at a time. Up to 40% of food produce is wasted globally, with 25% coming from farms. Odd box have identified this opportunity to connect the customer directly to the farmer.
The majority of food waste comes down to two reasons. The produce is too odd, meaning that it doesn’t meet the criteria to display, or the harvest was too strong. Minimal plastics , locally selected farms when possible and reduced wastage and three contributors to our ethikl rating. This, and more can be found below.
By 2023 Odd Box has “rescued” 40,000 tonnes of food which would have been wasted. Odd box use the phrase rescued for a good reason. They don’t order any food from farmers. They just pick up the produce which is surplus.
Food wastage can be down to being too big, small, wonky, too much, too ugly, out of season or many other reasons where wholesale are not interested. Odd box have been praised by farmers for there reasonable specs for acceptable food. This goes a long way to avoid wastage and meet their vision “A world where all food grown is eaten”.
Along side company wood donations, Giving back starts at home with Odd Box. The whole team is given volunteering days which are actively used. Odd box support the Felix project which aims to feed the homeless both with time and donations.
Any extra food at the end of the week goes to charities such as Fairshare, KIND, and City Harvest and since 2022 the equivalent of almost 1,200,000 meals have been donated.
In 2022 OddBox took a great step to partner with Green Element to develop Science Based Targets to achieve their Net Zero strategy.
Off to a great start, Oddbox have achieved 94% of their scope 1 and scope 2 emissions reduction targets setting a strong path towards their 2030 goals.
Odd box recognised the benefits of this approach whilst they are scaling, demonstrating a commitment to values over revenues.
